Cibiana di Cadore

Cibiana boasts a permanent murals exhibition of a very special kind. Thanks to the efforts of Osvaldo Da Col and Vico Calabrò, since 1980 it has become an open-air art gallery where, year after year, both Italian and foreign artists have painted the history of the village on the walls of the houses. Over 50 frescoes create a unique artistic ambience depicting the hard life and work of a bygone era. The lower quarter of the village preserves an interesting architectural heritage, with many buildings dating back to 1500 or 1700. A church was first built here in the 14th century, however the present church is dated 1852. Other chapels are to be found in Cibiana di Sotto (St Nicholas), in Pianezze (St Oswald) and in Masariè (Our Lady of Mount Carmel).

The Museum of the Dolomites “Museum in the Clouds”, set in a WWI fort on Mount Rite (2,181 metres a.s.l.), is inspired by the concept of “rock”; the exhibits illustrate the discovery of the Dolomites and the history of mountaineering in this area. On show there are artefacts and paintings of the Dolomites from the Romantic period through to contemporary art from Reinhold Messner’s private collection. While admiring the works of art, visitors can get a glimpse, through the museum windows, of some of the most famous Dolomitic peaks, from Marmolada to Mount Pelmo, Tofana di Rozes, Sorapis, Antelao and the Marmarole. The discovery of iron mines in Dubiea and Vallinferna in the 13th century was crucial for the village: as the iron ore was available locally, the manufacturing of keys began first as a local craft and later became a fully fledged industry.
