Lozzo di Cadore

The village preserves several buildings of architectural interest, from places of worship to rural houses and sites of manufacturing heritage. The existence of the church of St Lawrence Deacon and Martyr was already recorded in the 13th century; over the years it has undergone extensive renovations and changes and it is now used as the Village Hall.

The new parish church (1973) is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and houses wooden sculptures by G.B. De Lotto and Paolo Possamai and other sculptors from Val Gardena. There are other holy places, notably St Rocco’s chapel and the church of Our Lady of Loreto, built in 1658 next to an ancient Roman road, with works by Tomaso Da Rin. Palazzo Pellegrini, Casa de Meio and Da Pra Falisse are fine historic residences. Roggia dei Mulini, along the stream Rio Rin, is the place where, over the centuries, several industries and crafts thrived. You can visit the former cornmill, smithy, woolmill, sawmill and an early example of a power station. The Museo della Latteria (Dairy Production Museum) housed in the former dairy, shows the entire production process, from the collection of milk to the storage of various dairy products. The upland Pian dei Buoi (1,800 m a.s.l.) is an area of outstanding natural interest. It is still used, between mid-June to mid-September, as an alpine pasture. The milk produced here is processed to make cheese in the nearby casera delle Armente. From Pian dei Buoi you can enjoy the view of the Marmarole, Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the surrounding valleys or you can set off for an excursion to the WWI forts on Col Vidal as well as to Rifugio Ciarèido, a former military building (1890) which has been converted into a refuge. To find out more about the local wildlife, take a stroll along Sentiero Botanico Tita Poa.
