Vodo di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 21 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

Vodo lies in the valley cut by the river Boite, between the Dolomitic peaks Pelmo and Antelao. This area of Cadore, which includes Vodo, Borca and San Vito di Cadore, is also called “Oltrechiusa”. Vodo is the birthplace of G.P. Talamini, the founder of Il Gazzettino, the regional newspaper. The parish church is dedicated to St Lucia and dates from the 15th century, although the latest restoration work was carried out in 1920. Some paintings by Giuseppe Cherubini can be seen inside. In the vicinity there is St Lawrence’s church (18th century) in the area called Rezzuò and St Gregory’s on the main road. Not far is another hamlet, Peaio, with a nice square surrounded by houses built in the traditional mountain style and the church of the Holy Trinity (16th century). Still part of the parish, but higher up on a hill, Vinigo is called “the balcony of the Dolomites”, because from its panoramic position it dominates the entire valley. Vinigo is one of the oldest settlements in Cadore and is renowned for its traditional architecture as well as its parish church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, which was first recorded in a document dated 2nd March 1376. Inside you can admire some paintings by Titian’s school. A unique feature of this community is the large allotment, right in the middle of the village, where each family from the village owns a piece of land and can grow all kinds of things, especially the renowned cabbage.

Cibiana di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 13 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

Cibiana boasts a permanent murals exhibition of a very special kind. Thanks to the efforts of Osvaldo Da Col and Vico Calabrò, since 1980 it has become an open-air art gallery where, year after year, both Italian and foreign artists have painted the history of the village on the walls of the houses. Over 50 frescoes create a unique artistic ambience depicting the hard life and work of a bygone era. The lower quarter of the village preserves an interesting architectural heritage, with many buildings dating back to 1500 or 1700. A church was first built here in the 14th century, however the present church is dated 1852. Other chapels are to be found in Cibiana di Sotto (St Nicholas), in Pianezze (St Oswald) and in Masariè (Our Lady of Mount Carmel).

The Museum of the Dolomites “Museum in the Clouds”, set in a WWI fort on Mount Rite (2,181 metres a.s.l.), is inspired by the concept of “rock”; the exhibits illustrate the discovery of the Dolomites and the history of mountaineering in this area. On show there are artefacts and paintings of the Dolomites from the Romantic period through to contemporary art from Reinhold Messner’s private collection. While admiring the works of art, visitors can get a glimpse, through the museum windows, of some of the most famous Dolomitic peaks, from Marmolada to Mount Pelmo, Tofana di Rozes, Sorapis, Antelao and the Marmarole. The discovery of iron mines in Dubiea and Vallinferna in the 13th century was crucial for the village: as the iron ore was available locally, the manufacturing of keys began first as a local craft and later became a fully fledged industry.

Valle di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 13 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The origins of Valle are very old, as witnessed by the numerous Roman and pre-Roman finds brought to light in the 1950s by the archaeologist Enrico De Lotto and now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cadore. Walking along the Roman Road, in the hamlet of Costa, you can admire several historic houses in Venetian style, rural buildings and the remains of 1st and 2nd century homes. Worthy of note among the more elegant houses, which are decorated with arches, balconies and coats of arms, are Palazzo Piloni-Costantini (15th century), Palazzo Santin-Zampolli (16th century), Casa Galeazzi dei Galeazzetti now Ciliotta and Casa Barnabò (16th century). At the end of the road you will find St Martin’s church in a magnificent panoramic position. The church dates back to the 12th century and has been renovated and extended on several occasions; it holds works by Antonio De Bettio and Antonio Lazzarini. Each of the hamlets in the parish has its own chapel: Our Lady of Piety in Costa, with a painting by Tomaso da Rin, Our Lady of the Snows in Vallesina (19th century), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (17th century) in Ciesamas, St Rocco dating from the beginning of the 16th century with wooden sculptures by Tita De Lotto and finally the Holy Trinity in Zoval. The church in the nearby village of Venas is dedicated to St Mark (19th century) and holds a painting by Francesco Vecellio and wooden sculptures by G.B. De Lotto. In the hamlet of Suppiane there is St Mark’s chapel, dating from the 13th century and in Laste St Elizabeth’s shrine (15th century) and in Dovesto St James’s (end of the 16th century). To reach the village of Damos, you have to cross the Rualan bridge, covered by a wooden roof. In the village there is the church of St Andrew and St John, which was originally built in the 14th century and has one of the oldest frescoes in Cadore, depicting Christ’s on the cross. An excursion to Costa Piana, at the foot of Mount Antelao, offers the opportunity to admire the surrounding natural environment.

Perarolo di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 13 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

From the second half of the 14th century, and for centuries thereafter, timber trading was the basis of the local economy. It was here that logs tied up in rafts used to start their journey by river all the way to Venice. The history of timber floating is documented in the museum (Museo del Cidolo e del legname) housed in a 19th century palace “Casa dei Trofei”, decorated with fine stuccoes. The then queen of Italy, Queen Margherita, was a guest here. The exhibits in the museum are organised around the central piece, the “cidolo”, a sort of barrage used to stop the logs that floated down the river while allowing the normal water flow. The original machinery, a construction unique to Cadore, was installed in the area called Sacco and was dismantled in the 20th century. Palazzo Lazzaris, built by a family of timber traders, was the first residence of a sort of compound that includes the garden, Casa dei Trofei and the church. In the village there are other fine historic houses. The church, with paintings by Tomaso Da Rin and Giuseppe Ghedina, is dedicated to St Nicholas. It was built in 1407, but it has subsequently been altered on several occasions. Other churches in the area are St Anne’s and St Rocco’s, St Michael’s in Caralte and the oratory of Our Lady of Health in Macchietto. The men who used to float the timber all came from Caralte, a medieval hamlet which was completely destroyed by a fire in the 19th century. Only the bell tower and some 17th-18th  century tuff masks survived. The wilderness reserve of Val Montina, near Perarolo, is a wild and unspoilt environment where nature has reverted to what it was probably like in the late Mesolithic period.

Ospitale di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 13 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The archaeological site in Paluc, not far from the hamlet of Davestra, testifies the existence of an early medieval village founded on metallurgy that can be dated around the year 1000-1100 A.D. The excavations have uncovered large amounts of slag as well as stone houses and buildings that could have been used as workshops. The findings are kept in the local primary school. It is believed that around the year 1000 this area was one of the most important centres for iron production in the whole of Cadore. Another historical remain is the ancient Roman road which used to run along the Canale del Piave, north of Ospitale, and is still visible in places, its stones marked by carriage grooves. At the top of the village stands an ancient hostel, used by pilgrims and travellers who passed along the valley. The building is decorated with a 14th century mullioned window in gothic style. The parish church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, dates from 1290; inside there is a fine wooden sculpture by Valentino Pancera Besarèl. Fine works of art can also be found in St Mary Magdalene’s chapel in the hamlet of Termine. Other chapels are in Rivalgo (St John the Baptist), in Davestra (St Anthony of Padua) and in Sottospitale, where the oratory is dedicated to Our Lady of Health.

Lorenzago di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

Lorenzago is situated in a scenic position at the foot of Monte Cridola with a view that takes in the Centro Cadore valley and its lake up to Pieve, Titian’s birthplace. The village was developed following the plans by the architect Segusini (1801-1876) which gave prominence to the historic houses built in local stone, while allowing the later addition of art nouveau  buildings and, in the 20th century, new public buildings in neoclassical style by the architect R. Alfarè (1892-1969). The Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI spent their holidays in the villa next to Castello Mirabello. The two paths departing from this spot in the middle of a fantastic alpine landscape were used by the Popes for their walks towards the Mauria Pass. Photographs, souvenirs and memorabilia of the Pontiffs’ stays are collected in the three storeys of the Museum of the Popes housed in the 18th century vicarage. The parish church, built in 1778 by D. Schiavi and A. Dal Fabbro from Tolmezzo, displays works by T. Da Rin, G.B. Vicari and C. Vecellio, beside altars and a pulpit in late baroque style by F. Alois as well as a recently renovated organ by F. Comelli. The church of Our Lady of Defence, rebuilt and expanded in the 1800s, holds some 16th century frescoes attributed to Giovanni Pietro da San Vito al Tagliamento, wooden altars by M. Parth from Brunico and Zuane Pitor and his brother from Carnia. Worth mentioning is the organ by the venetian N. Moscatelli, while in Coresiei there is a chapel dedicated to St Anthony of Egypt. Pleasant strolls around the historic centre and along the gentle gradients of Parco dei Sogni are a prelude or a counterpoint to going hiking on more demanding itineraries. One such excursion leads to Miaron, where the WWI fort preserves the artillery emplacements and the shelters erected by the Military Engineers. A cross-country skiing track, in the area called Borbe, a sports complex in Riauto, equipped with tennis courts, five-a-side football pitches, volleyball and basketball courts, together with a fitness trail and clay tennis courts in Pesin are an invitation to take part in a range of sporting activities in a natural environment of great beauty.

Auronzo di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

Auronzo and Misurina occupy a large area of land surrounded by Tre Cime di Lavaredo and other famous Dolomites peaks. The long valley where the town sits, along the course of the River Ansiei, begins in the hamlet called Cima Gogna, where an ancient spa, already mentioned in documents dating back to 1590, later became a fashionable tourist destination.
The entrance to the town is now marked by a dam (built in 1929-1932) which creates the Santa Caterina Lake, around which there is a network of paths and walks.

The local museum, housed in Palazzo Corte Metto, displays collections ranging from biology and earth science to minerals and mining; the archaeology section contains the Roman and pre-Roman finds from the archaeological sites in the town.
Among the places of worship there is the parish church of St Justine, which dates back to the end of the 18th century, the church of Our Lady of Graces dedicated in 1745, and St Catherine’s church dating back to the 16th century. The Somadida Forest is a nature reserve rich in wildlife and trees, which used to supply the Republic of Venice with timber for its ship masts. Within the forest visitors can find easy walks, a small museum and a library with audio facilities for people with impaired sight.

The municipality also includes Misurina, the Pearl of the Dolomites, and its famous lake. On the shores of the lake stands the Istituto Pio XII, a centre for the treatment of asthma in children. From Misurina it is easy to reach the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a symbol of the Dolomites. According to tradition, in order to fix the boundary between Auronzo and Dobbiaco, it was decided to send two women, one from each town, at cockcrow to claim the land. By tricking the bird into crowing earlier, the woman from Auronzo was able to go further, so that the boundary was fixed on the Marogna bridge near Carbonin. From Misurina you can go up to Monte Piana, where many bloody battles were fought during the First World War. The restored trenches on the mountain are now an open-air museum.

Vigo di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

Historic buildings, works of art and ancient documents kept in the Historic Library of Cadore all bear witness to the importance of this village. It is for this reason that Vigo is considered the cultural heart of Oltrepiave, the land beyond the River Piave. The village boasts two amazing cycles of medieval frescoes: the oldest (end of the 13th century) in St Margaret’s church in the locality called Salagona, the other (middle of the 14th century), more widely known, can be seen in St Ursula’s church in Vigo. To appreciate how important art was in this area over the centuries, you only have to visit the other churches and chapels in the parish and admire their works of art, notably St Anthony of Egypt in Laggio, Our Lady of Defence, the parish church itself and St Bernard’s church in Pelos. The Biblioteca Storica Cadorina (Historic Library of Cadore) has a prominent place in the cultural life of the region. The Library, founded in 1892 by prof. Antonio Ronzon, a local historian, holds documents and manuscripts which are crucial to understanding the history of the area. Those interested in the historic events of WWI can visit the forts on Mount Tudaio and the emplacements on Col Cianpon, which have recently been restored, while nature lovers can pay a visit to the upland in Razzo, with its unspoilt environment, abundance of water and pastureland. Moreover this place is loved by stargazers as it is free from light pollution.

Lozzo di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The village preserves several buildings of architectural interest, from places of worship to rural houses and sites of manufacturing heritage. The existence of the church of St Lawrence Deacon and Martyr was already recorded in the 13th century; over the years it has undergone extensive renovations and changes and it is now used as the Village Hall.

The new parish church (1973) is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and houses wooden sculptures by G.B. De Lotto and Paolo Possamai and other sculptors from Val Gardena. There are other holy places, notably St Rocco’s chapel and the church of Our Lady of Loreto, built in 1658 next to an ancient Roman road, with works by Tomaso Da Rin. Palazzo Pellegrini, Casa de Meio and Da Pra Falisse are fine historic residences. Roggia dei Mulini, along the stream Rio Rin, is the place where, over the centuries, several industries and crafts thrived. You can visit the former cornmill, smithy, woolmill, sawmill and an early example of a power station. The Museo della Latteria (Dairy Production Museum) housed in the former dairy, shows the entire production process, from the collection of milk to the storage of various dairy products. The upland Pian dei Buoi (1,800 m a.s.l.) is an area of outstanding natural interest. It is still used, between mid-June to mid-September, as an alpine pasture. The milk produced here is processed to make cheese in the nearby casera delle Armente. From Pian dei Buoi you can enjoy the view of the Marmarole, Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the surrounding valleys or you can set off for an excursion to the WWI forts on Col Vidal as well as to Rifugio Ciarèido, a former military building (1890) which has been converted into a refuge. To find out more about the local wildlife, take a stroll along Sentiero Botanico Tita Poa.

Domegge di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The village lies on the shores of the Centro Cadore Lake and is surrounded by several mountain ranges, notably Spalti di Toro, Monfalconi and Marmarole. As you walk along its streets, you can admire several frescoed houses, such as the 16th century Palazzo Valmassoi in gothic style, casa Barnabò, casa Cian e casa Teza. St George is the patron of the parish: the original church burnt down in the 19th century but was swiftly rebuilt. The new parish church was designed in 1861 by the architects Segusini and Sandi. In the village there are several chapels: the oldest is St Joseph’s (17th century), St Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of the Snows and Our Lady of Health in Collesello, while the churches of Our Lady of Graces and Madonna del Ponte were built in the 18th century. St Rocco’s chapel displays a painting by Tommaso Vecellio. Other churches are to be found in Grea (St Leonard and St Anthony), in Molinà (Our Lady of Graces), in Deppo (St Bona) and the War Memorial.
Worthy of mention is the refuge of Eremo dei Romiti on Mount Froppa, which stands on the hill of the same name at 1,164 metres above sea level and was built in the 18th century. The nearby church of St John the Baptist the Precursor dates from 1724. These religious buildings were home to some Franciscan friars called “romiti” between 1720 and 1810. The hermitage was founded by the friar Giovanni Maria Pinazza and the life of the monks was defined by a series of prescriptions that regulated their daily activities until the community was closed by Napoleon’s decree in 1810 and the site was abandoned . In the last few years extensive restoration work has been carried out with the aim of using the buildings for cultural and tourist purposes. The Stations of the Cross have been set up along the footpath leading up to the compound.
