Domegge di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The village lies on the shores of the Centro Cadore Lake and is surrounded by several mountain ranges, notably Spalti di Toro, Monfalconi and Marmarole. As you walk along its streets, you can admire several frescoed houses, such as the 16th century Palazzo Valmassoi in gothic style, casa Barnabò, casa Cian e casa Teza. St George is the patron of the parish: the original church burnt down in the 19th century but was swiftly rebuilt. The new parish church was designed in 1861 by the architects Segusini and Sandi. In the village there are several chapels: the oldest is St Joseph’s (17th century), St Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of the Snows and Our Lady of Health in Collesello, while the churches of Our Lady of Graces and Madonna del Ponte were built in the 18th century. St Rocco’s chapel displays a painting by Tommaso Vecellio. Other churches are to be found in Grea (St Leonard and St Anthony), in Molinà (Our Lady of Graces), in Deppo (St Bona) and the War Memorial.
Worthy of mention is the refuge of Eremo dei Romiti on Mount Froppa, which stands on the hill of the same name at 1,164 metres above sea level and was built in the 18th century. The nearby church of St John the Baptist the Precursor dates from 1724. These religious buildings were home to some Franciscan friars called “romiti” between 1720 and 1810. The hermitage was founded by the friar Giovanni Maria Pinazza and the life of the monks was defined by a series of prescriptions that regulated their daily activities until the community was closed by Napoleon’s decree in 1810 and the site was abandoned . In the last few years extensive restoration work has been carried out with the aim of using the buildings for cultural and tourist purposes. The Stations of the Cross have been set up along the footpath leading up to the compound.

Magnifica Comunità di Cadore

In INFO by admin / 12 maggio 2013 / 0 Comments

The Magnifica Comunità di Cadore is based in the palace on Piazza Tiziano in Pieve di Cadore, alongside the archdeaconal church which symbolises the region’s faith. This ancient institution, founded in the fourteenth century, has for centuries represented Cadore’s autonomy of government thanks to a system of self-governance. From 1338 Cadore’s citizens had a statute, a set of rules which regulated civil, political and administrative affairs and which was updated continually in the centuries that followed. It fell to Napoleon, in 1806, to suppress the Magnificent Community which would later see its rebirth, as a moral entity, in 1875. Today the palace is home to the MARC, Cadore Archaeological Museum, which showcases the pre-Roman and Roman archaeological treasures from the sanctuary of Lagole and the central part of Cadore. The museum houses numerous exhibits: vases, handles of simpulum, ornate bronze sheets and figures, weapons, knives and day-to-day tools, and ceramic and glass receptacles. In addition, the palace is home to a precious archive comprising a historic collection of documents (decrees and scripts from the 13th to  the19th century) and a modern library bringing together studies and research articles on the Cadore, as well as a specialist library dedicated to Titian. Not far from the palace is the childhood home of Titian, first built in the 15th century and subsequently altered several times. Only the radical restorative intervention completed in 1932, organised by the Magnificent Community which owns the building, restored the artist’s home to its original state. Today the building is made up of two storeys in masonry with wooden external staircase and balconies and a two-layered roof covered in traditional wooden shingles. On December 17th 1922, Royal Decree no. 1725 declared the house a national monument.

Pieve di Cadore

In PAESI by admin / 14 novembre 2012 / 0 Comments

Pieve di Cadore, cultural and administrative centre of the area, is one of those towns where nature’s allure combines with history and art to bring to life the spirit of the place. Titian’s birthplace bears the hallmarks of the great Renaissance master’s presence, from the house where he was born to the place names and the elegant square which frames his statue right in front of the historic palace of Magnifica Comunità di Cadore. Next to the local government building, symbol of civic life, stands the imposing
church of Santa Maria Nascente (11th century) which in its present form dates to the 19th century. The rich decoration inside includes an altar piece by Titian – Madonna with child and saints – paintings by the Vecellio family, Francesco, Marco and Cesare, and the remains of a precious Fluegelaltar.

The main square is flanked by remarkable historic buildings, including Tiziano l’Oratore’s house, dating from the 16th century and seat of Fondazione Tiziano e Cadore, a research centre on Titian’s production (noteworthy is the study with frescoes of grotesques). Right in front of the Town Hall a recent archaeological dig has shed light on the remains of a second century Roman villa, whose mosaic floor is exhibited in the Cadore Archaeological Museum. As you go down Via Arsenale, first you come across the ancient fountain of St John Nepomuceno (1793) with palazzo Sampieri-Vallenzasca-Policardi at the back and then the house where Titian was born. Further down stands palazzo COSMO with the concert hall and Museo dell’Occhiale. The latter, the most important museum of its kind, holds a unique collection of almost four thousand pairs of glasses, showing the history of eyewear from the 14th to the 20th century.

A walk around the town or in the nearby hamlets offers the opportunity to admire fine examples of religious architecture: Christ Church in Valcalda, with its fine crucifix, St Lawrence’s church in Sottocastello, its fabric and woodwork still in their original form, the remains of St Bartholemew’s church, and the churchyard in Nebbiù which used to host a fine polyptych by Antonio Rosso (now at the Museo Jacquemart-André in Paris). St Candido in Tai holds three works by Cesare Vecellio, Titian’s cousin and collaborator, which are set in wonderful altar frames made of painted carved wood. In Pozzale the church of St Thomas the Apostle exhibits a polyptych by Vittore Carpaccio. An excursion to the top of San Dionisio’s hill is worth the effort: on the summit, at over 1,800 metres a.s.l., stands the chapel dedicated to the saint. The original building was constructed in 1508, when the people of Cadore fought for their freedom in the plain at the bottom of the hill.

From here the view is breathtaking: the villages – Tai, Nebbiù, Valle – nestle in the valley with a crown of peaks all around: the Marmarole range, the majestic Antelao, Mount Pelmo, Mount Rite with Cibiana at its foot. A short descent takes you to Rifugio Antelao, built by the writer and Resistance fighter Giovanna Zangrandi. Another pleasant walk from Pieve takes you to parco del Roccolo, with a panoramic terrace on the lake and the opportunity to see Father Christmas’s house. From here you can go up to Forte di Monte Ricco, where the ancient castle used to stand. After the latest restoration work, the site is now a memorial and will be used as a cultural centre in the future.
